It was spring break for Mr. & Mrs. Harold Heath from 16-20 March. They arrived on the evening of the 15th and I promptly took them downtown to a cozy Thai restaurant. Though exotic for their tastes, it was delicious, and I believe they enjoyed it.
On the morning of the 16th, we set out for one of the more well-known plantations, Houmas House, on the old river road, the idyllic setting for several plantations. It was one of the better home tours I have taken. Our tour guide was a lovely, older black woman with an impressive singing voice who committed the sacrilege--as some would opine--of playing a 200+ year old Steinway in the parlor. After returning home for the evening, we made our own jumbalaya with corn bread and fried okra.
Saturday was spent doing some yard work. Dad
and I cleaned out the back corner in my back yard and planted an elephant ear and 2 red buds. We also put some gravel down under my pull-up bars for a more aesthetic look. That evening we enjoyed 5 lbs. of local crawfish, red beans and rice, and more fried okra.
Sunday was spent attending church and fixing mom's new computer.
Monday was supposed to have included a trip to the Cabildo, a museum in the French Quarter, but it was closed. So we headed over to the Beuaregard-Keyes house for a tour, but it was closed also. As a last resort, I was hoping to see the mosaic exhibit at the Ursulines convent, but it too was closed. So, instead we drove around the Garden District and viewed City Park, then headed home for grilled hamburgers
The visit was a good one. So good, that I think they made themselves right at home!
